Finials of various shapes and sizes were used on most shield dial clocks. Typically two finials were placed on the top right and left of the shield and very occasionally another might be found on the very top of the shield breakarch. Also, on rare occasions a pendant finial might be found on the base. The ravages of time has meant that most finials have been lost and the evidence of their former exitence is to be seen in holes on the top of the shield or a shadow of the former finial support.
